Advanced Drawing

This course explores a broad variety of approaches and genres used in the creation of drawn images. Students investigate how artists apply formal aspects and select media to convey meaning in drawing. Building on the mark making and color usage introduced in Drawing l and ll, this course explores both traditional and nontraditional materials, methods and surfaces.

Coptic Sketchbook

This course was taught during COVID and was designed for students to easily work on projects from home. Students learned how to create coptic-bound sketchbooks using traditional bookbinding methods and materials. Using the sketchbook not only to complete assignments but also to regularly draw and develop ideas for projects was emphasized.

Dumas Assignment

Students are shown the breadth of Marlene Dumas’ work and create their own expressive portraits using water media. Students paint 12 different portraits and select 8 to turn in. They are encouraged to work loosely and/or allow for moments of abstraction. Evoking a sense of emotion is emphasized, as well as experimenting with a variety of techniques such as wet on wet, wet on damp, or wet on dry. Students select the  strongest work for submission and present a written reflection during critique.

Embroidery Project

Students learn about the history of embroidery and are shown contemporary examples of the medium. Through a series of in-progress critiques, students develop a concept for their project which involves gathering source images and experimenting with materials and embroidery techniques. Students consider texture, color palette and composition, and are asked to reflect on the distinguishment between art and craft.

Final Project

Students create a single large drawing based (in part) on the work of a contemporary artist. The final drawing os inspired by the work of this artist, but will utilize unique content, perspective, and style. Students complete 3 written self-reflections throughout this assignment. Students select one of the provided artists, research their work, and utilize materials and/or formal aspects of their work while incorporating their own subject matter and drawing style.
